a poem

When the subject
of your poem
is a poem,
you're writing
for the sake of writing,
and you're typing
to see where
words are going.
You have nothing on your mind
You just want some words that rhyme
So you type around a bit
And backspace a bit
And when it's about time
You make a quick exit

short short story 3

Freddie the weatherman was sad. His job was to tell people about the weather. Was it going to be sunny, rainy, breezy, snowy or stormy? Was it going to rain cats or was it going to rain dogs? Was lightning going to strike all the cows in the field? It was his job to answer those questions.

But there had been no weather at all for the past month. Nothing. It was not sunny. Not even rainy. The sky had been dreary and blank. Something was wrong and he wasn’t feeling well.

“I’m going to get to the bottom of this.” said Freddie to his dog Buddy.

Once out of the apartment, Buddy began to sniff and run, pulling Freddie along. They ran one kilometer until they reached a deserted park and Buddy started digging vigorously.

Buddy kept digging while Freddie caught his breath. Then Buddy started barking. Freddie ran towards the hole and to his amazement, found a giant rainbow curled up inside, sound asleep!

“GET UP, YOU!!! GET OUT OF THAT HOLE!” shouted Freddie.

The rainbow stretched. “What time is it?” he asked with his eyes still closed.

“Time to get up! Where have you been this whole month?” asked Freddie. “We need you. Come back. The sky’s a disaster. There’s nothing in it!”

“I just needed a nap. Don’t worry. I’m always here. If I’m not in the sky, I’m sleeping.”

Suddenly Freddie felt much better. It was reassuring to know that the rainbow was just below his feet.

“Just because we don’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t there, right Buddy?”

short short story - rainbow soup

My grandma has been sick in bed for 3 months and 4 days. She’s so sick her face has turned gray. Gray and wrinkly like an elephant. The doctors say they don’t have a cure. I don’t know where those doctors went to school but I graduated with a B+ from kindergarten last year and I might have an idea.

I decided to make her rainbow soup. I spend one day coming up with the ingredients and another day collecting them:
a jar of butterflies,
a chameleon, live
four ladybugs,
four gentleman bugs,
a sprinkle of raindrops,
a handful of gumdrops,
a rainbow trout,
moonshine, sunshine,
and nursery rhymes,
a book of poetry and jokes,
faith, love and hope.

If this doesn’t cure her, I don’t know what will.
The next day, I give grandma the rainbow soup.
“What’s this?” she asks.
“It’s soup. I put everything nice in it. Everything that’s ever made me happy.”
“Okay.” Says grandma as she gulps it down. “Not bad.”
“Get well soon, grandma. I know you will.”
She closes her eyes and goes to sleep.

The next day, I run into grandma’s room to check on her.
My mom is already there. “WHAT DID YOU DO??!!” she screams.
I catch a glimpse of grandma’s face. It is is every color of the rainbow!
“Hi grandma! Don’t worry. I’ll cure you for sure... Tomorrow!”
I run out of the room before my mom kills me.

Maybe I’ll just make her peach soup tomorrow.

Short short story - rainbow in outer space

Mike the astronaut was lost. He had just floated out of the Milky Way ... where was he now?

Then he blinked three times quick. Was he seeing things?  He reached out to touch the thousands of millions of floating, translucent, kidney-shaped jellies that surrounded him. They were smooth and cool, and they slipped through his fingers.

He grabbed a pink one and popped it in his mouth - cotton candy! He swam through the rainbow jellies, and started tasting every one... Banana! Pineapple! Popcorn! Vanilla! Mint! Mango! Cinnamon! They were the best things ever! Lemon! Watermelon! Pizza? Chocolate! Cheesecake! They tasted so good he had to eat every single one. Cookie dough! Bubblegum! Blueberry! Lime! Strawberry! There was no stopping him now!

* * * * *

A year later, Mike had devoured the whole Jelly Bean Way. And to this day, there is no evidence that the Jelly Bean Way ever exisited.
